2019 MEMORIAL DAY “MEMPHIS MURPH”

In memory of Navy (SEAL) Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, age 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005.


June 28th, 2005

A team of 4 Navy SEALs led by LT. Michael P. Murphy on a mission to capture or kill a key Taliban leader, found themselves in a firefight seriously outnumbered, with well over 100 enemy troops. Pinned down, and under intense enemy fire, with their communications operator severely wounded, they were in desperate need for help. Due to the mountainous terrain, their communications could not be received. Understanding the situation, LT. Michael P. Murphy moved to an open position exposing himself to enemy fire, to use his satellite phone to request immediate support. LT. Murphy was mortally wounded making that call. The fighting continued until LT. Murphy and two of his three teammates were mortally wounded. The fourth team member, severely injured managed to escape was taken in by a local villager, until he was rescued 4 days later. The surviving team member went on to tell the story in a book titled “The Lone Survivor”.


For his selfless leadership, courageous actions and extraordinary devotion to duty, LT. Michael P. Murphy received the Medal of Honor, he was the first service member to receive the medal for service in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam.


LT. Murphy had a favorite workout he called “Body Armor”. After his death, the CrossFit community renamed it, in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the people who make it what it is." “Body Armor” would now be referred to as “Murph”. A very demanding workout had just been given a name, and a soul.

The "Murph" consists of the following:


1 Mile Run to start

100 Pull-ups

200 Push-ups

300 Squats

1 mile run to finish


For time:

Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you’ve got body armor or a twenty-pound vest, wear it. For competition, you will be required to complete the prescribed Murph, which is with a weighted 20lb vest and unbroken.


Who, WHEN, where & WHY:

Anyone can participate, Memorial Day – Monday, May 27th, 8:00am at 347 S. Center St, Collierville, TN 38017 Our goal is to raise money for charities supporting military causes to include: The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Folds of Honor educational scholarships and the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.


HOW MUCH:

Registration is $75.00 for competition / $50.00 just for fun and includes an awesome event shirt, food and 1 drink ticket. Space is limited, early registration is encouraged.
