The 52-mile route from Navajo Mountain to Shonto traverses some of the most stunning, rugged and remote country in the lower 48. Beginning at the base of Natsisaan, the mountain fades quickly as you descend toward and then into the 2000-foot deep Piute Canyon on a precarious route. After climbing six miles out of the gorge, you begin the ride across Piute Mesa through some beautiful country among isolated family camps. Eventually, you will confront the very cool but challenging dunes of Sage Valley. After the climb out of Sage Valley, it’s then past Tall Mountain and on, for the next 15 miles, toward Shonto. Aid stations are situated on the south rim of Piute Canyon, near Thumb Rock, Sage Valley, Tall Mountain/Laughter’s Ranch Road and Jct. 6310/6321. It is recommended that you ride with some of the basics to meet your own needs – hydration, minor medical and mechanical kits, appropriate gear, and helmet.
