ABOUT THE 2019 FIRMMAN HALF IRON/SPRINT TRIATHLONS & SWIM RACE

Set in the lovely resort community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, FirmMan is a longtime favorite for many athletes and their families. There are several race options to welcome participants of varied interests: half distance triathlon, sprint triathlon, aquabike, and open water swim race. No matter which race you choose, you get a scenic course, enthusiastic volunteers, and welcome support.Come to race but stay a few extra days to enjoy the gorgeous beaches, wonderful restaurants, and local attractions of this tourist playground.

THE RACE COURSE

Swim

The swim takes place in the waters of Narragansett Bay. The 1.2-mile swim for the half distance triathlon and aquabike is a point to point swim course. The half mile swim for the sprint triathlon is a triangular course. Typical water temperatures range from 65-70 degrees, therefore wetsuits are highly recommended. The swim for the Sprint Tri starts at 8:00 AM, is an accurate 1/2 mile in a rectangular shape heading in a clockwise direction, where swimmers will be required to keep their right shoulders around all buoys. The sprint swim is held NORTH of the South Pavilion and requires just a short walk to the start. The start is from the beach in ankle deep water, and the swimmers head out into Narragansett Bay taking a right turn at the first triangular buoy, then heading towards the famous Narragansett Towers and seawall, taking another right at the second triangular buoy, and heading into shore towards the lifeguard chair which will have buoys attached to it for sighting purposes.

Swimmers will be directed into shore and into T1 where there will be wading pools to rinse the sand off their feet, crossing the timing mat and then into transition where their bikes are racked. There will be wetsuit peelers for those swimmers opting to have their wetsuits taken off of them in transition on the green carpeted area. If electing to have your wetsuit peeled off, please roll it halfway down as your enter the peeling area and then just lie down, lift your legs up, and the peelers will take your wetsuit off. Once off, the athlete MUST take their wetsuits to their bike rack.

Bike

The 56-mile bike route for the half distance triathlon and aquabike combines riding on scenic rolling countryside roads and hammering fast sections on the US Route 1 freeway (under the watchful eyes of police officers). Winds tend to be from the south each year, so a tailwind is present most of the time on the return leg of the course. There are two water bottle exchanges: one at mile 27; one at mile 35. Water, Gatorade, Gu, and bananas are available at each exchange. The bike course closes at noon. The 10.1-mile bike route for the sprint is out and back. There are NO bottle exchanges on the sprint bike course. heart rate a beat or two.

Run

The run course for the half distance triathlon offers 13.1 miles of beautiful Narragansett scenery with enthusiastic volunteers supporting the runners along the way. An aid station is located approximately every mile with water, Gatorade, Gu, bananas, pretzels, and electrolytes. The final hundred yards includes a beach run with hundreds of beachgoers cheering the athletes as they finish. The run course closes at 3PM. The 3-mile run course for the sprint triathlon is an out and back run along Ocean Road, and includes the same final beach run section as the half iron event.
