What’s better than a Duathlon?...A DeAthlon!

The 53 Strong DeAthlon 2019 will be held August 10th at Marvin Town Centre in Waxhaw, NC. The DeAngelo Williams Foundation’s “DeAthlon” event isn’t your traditional run-bike-run, it's a run-bike-FUN course. DeAthletes will complete a reverse brick (run and bike) ...not ready for both?... you can also sign up to do just the 5K or any of the bike distances. The DeAthlon race consists of a 3.4 mile run (timed at the traditional 5K distance) followed by either 20, 34, or 53 road miles of cycling with a memory game along the bike route that will test the mind, body, and sole (ya see what we did there?) The distances are accolades to DeAngelo’s jersey numbers while playing football, 34 with the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers and 20 while playing for the University of Memphis Tigers. 53 is the age that DeAngelo's mom passed away from breast cancer and the number of mammograms that the DWF provides at each 53 Strong for Sandra event in her memory.

The 53 Strong DeAthlon is the creation of DeAngelo’s love-hate relationship with running and biking combined with his passion for a little fun and games.

About The DeAngelo Williams Foundation:

The DeAngelo Williams Foundation (DWF) is the official charity founded by DeAngelo Williams, former running back of the Carolina Panthers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. DeAngelo started the DWF in 2006 in honor of his mother and four aunts that all passed away from breast cancer. In December 2014, DeAngelo started “53 Strong for Sandra” in Charlotte, NC, an initiative in which the DWF funds 53 mammography screenings for women who are uninsured or under-insured. In addition to the screening events, the foundation also covers the cost of follow up appointments and treatments when needed and when cancer is discovered. The number of mammograms provided at each event is a tribute to DeAngelo’s mother, Sandra, who was 53 years old when she passed away in May of 2014. By 2017 the foundation expanded the outreach of “53 Strong for Sandra” by funding mammography screenings for women in Pittsburgh, PA and Memphis, TN while continuing service in Charlotte, NC. DeAngelo is currently looking to expand to other cities with the ultimate goal of reaching all 50 states.

All proceeds from the “53 Strong” series events will go towards achieving this goal.
