Food Ministry Programs
Food Pantry. Saint Patrick Community Outreach, Inc. (StPatCO) works with other churches and the Memphis Food Bank to provide healthy food to those families who are prescreened and referred by MIFA. The Food Pantry served hundreds of needy families during 2011. The Food Pantry is staffed the Director of StPatCO and a team of volunteers. Hours of operation are Tues.-Fri.,1:00 until 3:00 p.m.
Soup on Sunday. The Soup on Sunday Program provides a hot cup of soup, home made cornbread, and a beverage to the hungry and homeless each Sunday, except the Fourth Sunday. Approximately 185 meals are provided to the hungry and the homeless on these Sundays between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.
More Than A Meal. On the 4th Sunday of each month between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. over 160 men, women and children from the Vance Avenue Neighborhood are invited to sit down to a hot meal consisting of a meat, two vegetables, bread, a beverage and desert. Guests are invited to share their prayer intentions which are then read during the meal. A diverse group of volunteers from the Memphis Metropolitan area have acted as cooks and servers in this program.
Common Ground Garden. StPatCO provides the land and oversight for the garden located at 276 S. Lauderdale. Approximately 6 families participate in and benefit from the garden. Volunteers from the community, schools and churches have helped with garden activities. Grow Memphis provides guidance and helps with plant materials. During the summer, pickling and canning classes take place for the community at the StPatCO Center. A recent collaboration with JIFF (Juvenile Intervention in a Faith-based Follow=up) has resulted in additional educational opportunities for their clients as well as providing some organic herbs and vegetables for their cooking classes.
The Green Machine. Modeled after Chicago’s Fresh Moves mobile markets, our mobile food market utilizes a retired MATA bus to bring fresh fruits, vegetables and other staples to the food deserts of Memphis. The bus is scheduled to roll out in May, 2013, operating 5 days a week and making three stops per day. This program came out of the planning efforts of the Vance Avenue Collaborative. The University of Memphis, Department of City and Regional Planning has provided planning services and manpower to make this concept a reality. Saint Patrick Community Outreach, Inc. will administer the operation of The Green Machine.
