Set in the lovely resort community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, FirmMan Rhode Island is a long time favorite for many athletes and their families. There are several race options to welcome participants of varied interests: half iron distance triathlon, sprint triathlon, aquabike, and open water swim race. No matter which race you choose, you get a scenic course, enthusiastic volunteers, and welcome support.

Come to race, but stay a few extra days to enjoy the gorgeous beaches, wonderful restaurants, and local attractions of this tourist playground.

The Race Course

The swim takes place in Narragansett Bay. The 1.2 mile swim for the half Iron distance triathlon and aquabike is a point to point swim course. The 0.5 mile swim for the sprint triathlon is a triangular course. Typical water temperatures range from 65-70F, and wetsuits are highly recommended.

The 56 mile bike route for the half iron distance triathlon and aquabike combines riding on scenic rolling countryside roads and hammering fast sections on Route 1. Winds tend to be from the south each year so a tailwind is present most of the time on the return leg of the course. There are two water bottle exchanges: one at mile 27; one at mile 35. Water, Gatorade, Gu, and bananas are available at each exchange. Bike course closes at noon. The 10.1 mile bike route for the sprint is out and back. There are not bottle exchanges on the sprint bike course.

The run course for the half iron distance triathlon offers 13.1 miles of beautiful Narragansett scenery with enthusiastic volunteers to support the runners along the way. An aid station is located approximately every mile with water, HEED, Gu, bananas, pretzels, and electrolytes. The final hundred yards includes a beach run with hundreds of beach-goers cheering the athletes as they finish. The run course closes at 3:00 PM. The 3 mile run course for the sprint triathlon is an out and back run along Ocean Road, and includes the same final beach run section as the half iron event.

Race Venue Activities
Your triathlon experience includes a DJ playing great music, yummy post race snacks, and a New England style BBQ with hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and watermelon!

USA Triathlon rules apply. The most commonly violated rules are drafting, blocking, and crossing the center line of the road. To avoid a drafting penalty, stay at least three bicycle lengths behind the rider in front of you and complete any pass within fifteen seconds. If you are overtaken, you must drop back three bicycle lengths before attempting to pass. To avoid a blocking penalty, ride to the right of the road except when passing other competitors. To avoid a center line penalty, do not cross the center yellow line of the road.

Helmets with the chin strap fastened are required whenever you are on your bike. Bar end plugs are required on handlebars and aero bars; taping over the bar ends is not permitted. Head phones and music players are strictly prohibited.

ChampionChip Timing Systems

ChampionChip Timing Systems is used to time this event. A timing chip attached to a black velcro strap is provided in each competitor's race bag. The timing chip must be worn on the left ankle at all times during the race for an official race time to be recorded. Return the timing chip to a volunteer at the finish line to avoid the $30 replacement fee. Race results are posted at the race venue, and on www.firm-racing.com and www.coolrunning.com.

Volunteers

Not racing, but want to be a part of this event? Then volunteer. It's a fun way to help others enjoy this sport. Volunteers receive a tech race shirt, post race food, and a sense of satisfaction from helping others. Email Wendy at wendy@firm-racing.com to volunteer.
